Let's face if Obama is a Novice.

He has an ego a mile long and loves taking his family on trips around the world. When foreign leaders offer him their usual platitudes, he really believes they like him and will accept his views & policies.

Sorry. The real world recognizes two and only two virtues: power and might. It has always been that way, and always will. Cloak day to day diplomatic niceties with the ever present phony rhetoric all you want to, they will judge our President and us on their current perception of our power and might.

If they see an abatement of military forces or equipment, or a lessening of national will to pursue hard nosed global politics, they will act. Just as they did in 1941, again in 1951, Vietnam circa Tet 1968, and the Carter years.

Wake up America before it is too late...

Obama was so frustrated by the lack of preparatory work in Italy that he sent out his top civil servants to organize something substantial....

G8 summits usually do not lead to much in terms of tangible outcomes.

It will be interesting to see if Obama's creating an agenda for the G8 will result in more substantial outcomes than is normal. His approach to international diplomacy has already resulted in tangible results, for example reaching agreement with Russia to cut nuclear stockpiles, so I'm optimistic. But Obama has also had failures, like no discernable progress on Iran, so my optimism is tempered.

Certainly, he can't get less done than Burlusconi was planning to do, so Obama gets props for trying to maximize an opportunity, regardless of outcome.
